ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The Greater Cape Floristic Region

Abstract: Aim  The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) (Cape Floristic Kingdom) is currently narrowly delimited to include only the relatively mesic Cape fold mountains and adjacent intermontane valleys and coastal plains. We evaluate the floristic support for expanding the delimitation to include the whole winter‐rainfall area (arid and mesic climates) into a Greater CFR. Location  Southern Africa, particularly the south‐western tip. Methods  The initial divisive hierarchical classification analysis twinspan used the presence/… Show more

“…In many cases, a small minority of the species is also found outside the focal areas; these were included in the diversity counts. In total, 70 clades were identified (electronic supplementary material), of which 68 can be more or less grouped to the following focal areas: the Andes (11 clades); the Greater Cape Floristic Region (18 clades; Born et al 2006); Australia (14 clades); New Zealand (8 clades); the tropical regions of Africa and South America (7 clades); and Eurasia (10 clades).…”

“…The allocation of species to floristic elements is a very complex process and there is still no consensus in the choice of the best criteria for such chorological divisions and delimitations (Schmid 1945;Preston and Hill 1997;Born et al 2007). As a result, no authors or works to date have assigned all the European plants to floristic elements.…”

“…The south coast of South Africa is within the Cape Floristic Region (CFR), a phytogeographic area defined by the spatial extent of significant winter rainfall, strong influence of Cape Fold Mountain geology, and extremely high endemism of plant species and genera (Born et al, 2007 Cowling and Richardson, 1995), but much of this vegetation was quickly supplanted by agriculture historically due to the higher nutrient quality of the soil it lived on. Renosterveld tends to occur in regions that receive 300-600 mm of annual rainfall (Cowling and Richardson, 1995).…”
