Original Experimental Campaign of Indentation Instrumented on Aggregates of Non-Hazardous Waste Incineration Bottom Ash to Study the Heterogeneity of their Rigidity

Abstract: An extensive experimental work of instrumented indentation on isolated particles of Non-Hazardous Waste Incineration bottom ash (NHWI) is presented in this paper. The aggregates studied come from the Garenne quarries at Vignoc (Brittany, France). Two spherical tungsten carbide indenters of respective 0.5 and 140 mm radius “R” were used for test series “A” and “B”. The particles studied have diameters ranging between 20 and 25 mm. With a 0.5 mm radius indenter, average reduced elastic moduli ranging from 15 to … Show more

“…The 0.5 mm radius indenter has made it possible to test the solid phases separately while the 140 mm radius indenter has been used to test an extensive zone integrating different solid phases and the porosity. The original experimental campaign of indentation instrumented on aggregates of NHWI bottom ash is presented in detail in [30,[33][34][35][36]. The "Oliver and Pharr" method [2] has been used to determine the mean elastic reduced modulus.…”

“…Ballast, a bed of crushed stones that directly receives the armament of the track, plays an essential role in the good performance and durability of the track. Study of the mechanical behaviour of materials used in public works in general has been of interest to the scientific community for a very long time [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The case of materials used as railway ballast is also a branch of public works that attracts a lot of interest.…”
