Show more

“…The virus itself has been more lethal to undocumented migrants that cannot protect themselves through isolation (Lager et al, 2021). Worry about virus infection is higher among elderly, women, and low-paid workers (Kulin et al, 2021), and Swedes in general have dissimilar expectations about their well-being after Corona (Kivi et al, 2020; Kulin et al, 2021). This broad array of experiences and expectations, underscoring that the Corona Crisis is not singular at all, includes a contingent present that builds on historical patterns and extends into the future (cf.…”

“…Not everyone is equally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some societal groups, like older persons, are suffering more than other age groups in terms of worry and stress about the pandemic and their life satisfaction (Buyukkececi, 2021 ; Kulin et al, 2021 ). One of the reasons for this might be that because of their age they are considered a high-risk group, meaning that they have an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.…”

“…First, older people are more vulnerable than other age groups. Studies focusing on worry and stress with the pandemic conducted on large world-wide samples (Buyukkececi, 2021 ), as well as individual countries (Kulin et al, 2021 ) show that older people worry more about the pandemic and are more stressed because of it. Because older age groups are one of the risk groups for COVID-19, meaning that they have an increased risk for severe illness, they might carry a higher psychosocial burden (Blix et al, 2021 ), which can lead to elevated stress levels and can have important consequences for older adults’ psychological and mental health (Tyler et al, 2021 ; Zaninotto et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In Sweden, the corona strategy stated that all citizens over the age of 70 were to avoid contact with others, and, especially, to stay away from interactions with grandchildren. This affected practices of care and emotional support in personal and kin relationships, and especially between generations (Iversen et al 2020;Kulin et al 2021). The crisis has brought new attention to issues of care in general (Daly 2021), and the significance of care between generations in Sweden in particular, questioning sociological theories depicting the country as the 'most individualized' society in the world where the expansive welfare state is seen as having led to a 'defamilialization' (Esping-Andersen 1999) resulting in weakening intergenerational ties (Bauman 2003;Berggren & Trägårdh 2006).…”
