Orthodontic and orthopaedic approach in the treatment of skeletal open bite

Abstract: The aim of this study was to make a detailed evaluation of the changes in the dentofacial structures that could be effective in the elimination of skeletal open bite. The study was performed on 32 skeletal open bite cases which were treated with Begg technique, Edgewise technique, and functional appliances and findings were analysed by multivariate statistical methods. Open bite was significantly reduced in all of the treatment groups. Apart from minor differences, similar changes were observed with Begg and E… Show more

“…[9][10][11] Various treatment approaches can be found in the literature with regard to early treatment of anterior open bite. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The elimination of persisting sucking habits and the control of the vertical dimension must be therapeutic objectives. The correction of maxillary constriction is an additional target for treatment in patients with open bite.…”

“…In the dentistry, especially in the orthodontics, the target of study is a living organ, so more attention has been paid to anterior teeth themselves than to the bony alveolar process. Cephalograms have generally been used in orthodontic field for diagnosis of malocclusion and skeletal investigations (Wei, 1968;Keating, 1985;Argyropoulos and Sassouni, 1986;Arat and Iseri, 1992;Shimamura and others, 1993;Almond and others, 1999). The present study was intended to combine both anthropological method and orthodontical method.…”

“…Although some reports tend to discourage the use of functional appliances [6,10], treatments with functional techniques have been reported to produce beneficial skeletal outcomes. Functional appliances can stimulate a counterclockwise mandibular rotation, permit the mandible to continue growing in a more favorable direction and encourage a physiological posture of the tongue during oral functions [2,3,[11][12][13][14]. In that context, early correction of open bites with functional appliances can lead to favorable and stable results [13][14][15][16][17][18][19].…”
