Orthodontic and prosthetic rehabilitation of unilateral free‐end edentulous space

Abstract: Most patients prefer fixed dentures, even in the presence of uni and bilateral free-end saddle. The most suitable treatment for this is an implant or implant-supported prosthetic restoration. A combined prosthetic and orthodontic treatment with distalization of a posterior tooth towards the edentulous region is an alternative approach. This study involved a 34.3 year old female patient who had a free-end edentulous space on the left mandibula and missing 1st and 3rd molars on the right mandibula. The patient w… Show more

“…The tooth movement over the atrophic ridge have been demonstrated to be an alternative treatment approach for formation of alveolar bone through the transfer path, 8 allowing better condition for implant placement. [4][5][6][7] Besides its advantages, this movement has been less investigated regarding root resorption, mainly the ELRR, that is a less common side-effect during a conventional orthodontic treatment. 7 In the present study, the null hypothesis should be partially rejected, once the EARR scores were similar in teeth moved through the atrophic edentulous ridge comparing to controls.…”

“…3 In this context, the use of orthodontic movement becomes an interesting alternative to restore the dimensions of the atrophic ridge, optimizing the relationship between the adjacent hard and soft tissues. [4][5][6][7] To have proper preservation of the alveolar bone as well as root integrity, the movement must take place in the absence of plaque, which can promote additional inflammation. 8,9 The force used should also maintain a physiological level, since excessively heavy forces can result in significant root resorption.…”

“…The advantage of this treatment option is that vertically or horizontally atrophied edentulous ridge segments do not need surgical reconstruction, as reconstruction here is done by means of tooth movement. This spares the patient the need for more extensive preparatory surgery in case of implant treatment option, such as alveolar ridge augmentation or guided tissue regeneration (Arslan et al, 2006).…”
