“…Whether Palamas and Aquinas are in perfect agreement as to the meaning of this distinction in all cases is a question that lies far beyond the scope and ambitions of this paper. I do intend to establish here, however, that in at least three key junctures in their accounts of the God/creation relationship, Aquinas and Palamas not only accept but also interpretively apply Dionysius's distinction in essentially identical ways: namely, (1) in order to guard against pantheism, (2) in order to uphold divine freedom, and (3) in order to acknowledge the unknowability of God in Himself. In so doing, Aquinas and Palamas arrive at three essentially identical theological conclusions regarding God's relation to the world.…”
