Orthopaedic residents demonstrate retention of point of care ultrasound knowledge after a brief educational session: a quasi experimental study

Abstract: Background: Musculoskeletal point of care ultrasound (MSK POCUS) has many uses for orthopaedic surgeons, but orthopaedic trainees are rarely exposed to this modality. The purpose of this project was to assess the usefulness in clinical education of a newly implemented MSK POCUS course in an orthopaedic surgery program. Methods: An MSK POCUS course for orthopaedic surgery residents was developed by an interdisciplinary team. Online videos were created to be viewed by residents prior to a half-day long practical… Show more

“…22 In contrast, the study done by Larrivee et al showed that residents significantly improved their subjective comfort level with all aspects of USG use at 6 months (p = 0.007-0.018) but did not significantly increase clinical usage frequency. 21 The self-reported confidence level increased significantly in all areas of POCUS after the workshop. Similar results were found in health care workers in Cusco, Peru, where they reported increased confidence in their FAST scan ability and in their comfort in using this exam for clinical decision-making after a training session focusing on the use of USG in trauma.…”

“…In addition, when ranking which form of point-of-care ultrasound was the most unfamiliar among 854 Canadian family medicine residents, MSK ultrasound ranked the highest [ 4 ]. Despite the difficulty and lack of exposure to MSK ultrasound, it is rapidly becoming integrated into medical education for residents in MSK-related specialties, such as physical medicine and rehabilitation and orthopedic surgery, due to its ability to diagnose a high variety of common MSK conditions [ 5 , 6 ]. Point-of-care ultrasound in general has become widely adopted into medical school preclinical curricula as well [ 7 ].…”
