Orthorexia Nervosa in Turkish Dietitians

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of orthorexia nervosa in dietitians, as assessed by administering ORTO-15, Eating Attitudes Test-40 (EAT-40) and Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI). Our study included 117 dietitians (Ankara). Orto-15 test scores below 40 points was considered indicative of orthorexia, while higher scores indicated a normal eating behavior. “…The high prevalence of ON in the current study population is reflected in previous studies, where higher prevalence was found in yoga instructors (86%) [30], dieticians (41.9%) [31], nutrition students (35.9%) [32], exercise science students (84.5%) [33], and patients recovering from AN or bulimia nervosa (58%) [40] compared to the general population (<1%) [29, 34]. These are all populations who take an active interest in their health and body, in the same way that the healthy eating community on Instagram might be.…”

“…Currently the ORTO-15 questionnaire [29] is used to determine the presence of ON. Higher prevalence has been found in yoga instructors [30], dieticians, [31], nutrition students [32], and exercise science students [33] compared to the general population. The prevalence of ON in the general population was recently estimated to be less than 1% [34].…”

“…Earlier studies have shown that the ORTO-15 and EAT-40 correlate. 22,29 Here, the D-ON and D-ED groups had higher scores for every subscale of the EDE-Q6 than the D-HC group, demonstrating that ON involves not only the expected associations related to eating choices (assessed in the EDE-Q, eating concern) and control (EDE-Q, restraint) but also includes cognitive preoccupations about body shape (EDE-Q, shape) and weight (EDE-Q, weight).…”

“…In contrast with our results, the Turkish study [14] showed that subjects, who displayed pathological eating attitudes (b = -0.25) and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (b = -0.17), were more likely to display orthorexic behaviors. However, Asil and Saip Sürücüoglua [50] observed no relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder and ON among female sample.…”
