“…The same sensitive dependence of the mm of the interfacial layer is reported for Fe/V/MgO and Fe/Co heterostructures. 49,50 In the following, we provide a qualitative understanding of this finding. On the one hand, our calculations suggest hybridization of Fe 3d with O 2p states, where the electronic structure of both Fe and O resemble the state of FeO, which explains the formation of polarized oxygen-derived states usually found at the Fe-MgO interface.…”

“…It is possible that the reduction observed may be due to a decrease in magnetic polarization in this intermixed region. The magnetic moment of bcc Co across the Co/Fe(1 10) interface in multilayer structures of the form (2 nm Co/1-4 nm Fe) 10 /20 nm Fe/GaAs(1 10) has been determined experimentally by means of perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy by Swinnen et al [1119][1120][1121][1122]. In this technique, trace amounts of diamagnetic atoms are implanted across the magnetic structure and modifications in the hyperfine field are used as probes of the local magnetic field, allowing the determination of the magnetization profile across the interface.…”
