Osseointegration: An Update

Abstract: Osseointegration, defined as a direct structural and functional connection between ordered, living bone and the surface of a load-carrying implant, is critical for implant stability, and is considered a prerequisite for implant loading and long-term clinical success of end osseous dental implants. The implant-tissue interface is an extremely dynamic region of interaction. This complex interaction involves not only biomaterial and biocompatibility issues but also alteration of mechanical environment. The proces… Show more

“…In consequence, the body usually responds by forming a nonadherent fibrous tissue (through a process called fibrosis) around the surface of the material, and progressively, they are completely encapsulated by such layer. Several works have reported the severe reduction in the mechanical strength of a fibrous encapsulated implant compared with a properly osseointegrated implant [1]. On the other hand, these problems can be worsened by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections occurring around the implant.…”

“…20 Since a long time, it has advocated that a two-stage surgical procedure for load-free and submerged healing is a prerequisite to enclose predictable osseointegration. 21 Challenges facing patients and clinicians are inconvenience, discomfort, and anxiety that are related with the waiting period. Consequently, implant loading later after placement was attempted and has gained popularity among clinicians.…”
