Osservatorio sismico delle strutture: the Italian structural seismic monitoring network

Abstract: The OSS (acronym of the Italian name “Osservatorio Sismico delle Strutture”) is a network of permanent seismic monitoring systems installed in public buildings, and also in some bridges and a dam. Each system consists of a number of sensors sufficient to completely describe the dynamic behaviour of the structure. Structural typologies have been selected according to their representativeness of the public building stock and to their importance for the emergency management. Some relevant aspects are addressed, i… Show more

“…The OSS, is a nationwide network founded by the Italian Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (DPC) in the 1990s. The aim of the OSS network is to monitor various strategic Italian buildings, such as bridges, schools, hospitals and city halls [10].…”

“…As it is possible to notice in Figure 9, and confirmed by an average correlation coefficient of À0.86 for all the modes, in this case, the logarithmic regression lines almost perfectly match the identified frequency data, especially for the bell-tower flexural modes. Previous experiences [2] might explain these results as the effect of a possible damage mechanism of the nave associated with this mode, e.g. It is worth noting that the fourth mode varies of 46.5% with amplitude, whereas the other modes vary of less than 30%.…”

“…Because, according to OSS surveys [2], none of the building was seriously damaged by the seismic swarm, the prevalent cause leading to the variation of modal properties has to be the interaction between the structure and the soil-foundation systems. In fact, similar trends and regression coefficients were obtained even if the first building is founded on clay and the latter on sandstone.…”

“…However, deployment of SHMS in tunnels has not been as widespread as for other infrastructure assets, such as bridges and buildings (Fraser et al, 2010;Dolce et al, 2017), mainly due to the lack of a standardized approach resulting from the special nature of each project and the harsh environment faced by sensors (Bhalla et al, 2005). Fortunately, such issues have recently been addressed (Bennett et al, 2010;Tondini et al, 2015;Li et al, 2016) resulting to an increase in their deployment (Dikmen, 2016;Wang et al, 2017).…”
