Ossification of Transverse Scapular Ligament in North Indian Population

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Suprascapular nerve may be compressed anywhere along its course but commonly compressed at the level of suprascapular notch and spinoglenoid notch. Supra-scapular notch is bridged by superior transverse scapular ligament and changes into a foramen which provides passage for suprascapular nerve. When it is completely ossified it becomes suprascapular foramen in dry scapulae. Overhead abduction of shoulder joint exerts traction on the suprascapular nerve, which leads to its compression against superi… Show more

“…In some instances, this ligament may become ossified, resulting in a bony foramen. 5 The suprascapular notch functions as a conduit for the suprascapular vessels and nerve. 6 The suprascapular nerve, which is a mixed peripheral nerve containing both motor and sensory elements, is a branch of the upper trunk (C5,6) of the brachial plexus.…”

“…The completely and partially ossified STSL both were more common in right side as compared to left side. [16] Vandana R et al studied on 134 Indian dried scapulae and classified the SSN into six different types i.e. U, J, V, W, Indentation and absent SSN.…”
