Osteitis of the axial border of the proximal sesamoid bones in horses: eight cases (1993–1999)

Abstract: Results suggest that osteitis of the axial border of the proximal sesamoid bones is a distinct entity in horses that typically is associated with inflammation of the associated metacarpointersesamoidean or metatarsointersesamoidean ligament and may be a result of sepsis or nonseptic inflammation. Arthroscopic debridement may allow horses without evidence of sepsis to return to their previous level of performance.

“…These generally involve substantially less bone loss than lesions described by Dabareiner et al (2001) such that this may be radiologically silent. The lesions have been managed by removal of detached and apparently nonviable tissue in line with standard arthroscopic principles.…”

“…Even the horse might benefit of arthroscopic debridement of the impar ligament and creating a connection between the DIP joint and the bursa analog to the treatment of desmitis of the intersesamoidean ligament and axial ostitis of the proximal sesamoid bones (Dabareiner et al 2001). However, the prognosis is not favourable.…”

“…Dabareiner et al (2001) gained positive results by arthroscopic debridement of the intersesamoidean ligament and the abaxial site of the proximal sesamoid bones in case of desmitis of the intersesamoidean ligament and axial ostitis of the proximal sesamoid bones. The results in the described cases was surprisingly positive and might be an idea for the horses with palmar foor syndrome due to a desmitis if the impar ligament.…”
