Osteochondral Autograft Transfer for Treatment of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Caudocentral Humeral Head in Dogs

Abstract: OAT procedures are technically feasible in the caudocentral aspect of the canine humeral head. Articular contour reconstruction, resurfacing of osteochondral defects, and amelioration or resolution of short-term lameness may be achieved.

“…Osteochondral autograft transfer (OAT) involves the implantation of cores of osteochondral tissue collected from another joint into a recipient bed created from the original OC defect. This approach has led to good short‐term clinical outcomes in dogs with OCD lesions . A discrepancy in the subchondral bone density and a cartilage split‐line pattern mismatch of donor and recipient sites has been identified in stifle to elbow tissue transfers, but the clinical impact of these discrepancies is yet to be established.…”

“…Surgical strategies for the treatment of osteochondral defects of the stifle include debridement, curettage of the lesion and bone marrow stimulation with microfracture [1], or restorative procedures such as osteochondral autograft transfer (OAT) [2-4]. OAT consists of implanting an osteochondral graft into a recipient bed created at the site of the osteochondral defect [2-4].…”

“…OAT consists of implanting an osteochondral graft into a recipient bed created at the site of the osteochondral defect [2-4]. In humans, the therapeutic use of osteochondral grafting has been demonstrated in multiple reports with successful short and long term outcomes reported, even in athletic patients [5-7].…”
