Osteoid Osteoma of the Hand: Surgical Treatment versus CT-Guided Percutaneous Radiofrequency Thermal Ablation

Abstract: (1) Background: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is one of the most common benign bone tumors. This type of osteogenic tumor is generally characterized by a well-defined lytic area with a vascularized central nidus surrounded by sclerosis and bone thickening. The wrist and hand bones are infrequent sites for osteoid osteoma: only 10% of the cases arise in these areas. Standard treatments are surgical excision and radio-frequency ablation (RFA), both with advantages and disadvantages. This study aimed to compare the two te… Show more

“…Only a few case reports were available for the literature review, which might have led to selection bias. [ 28 ] In some narrow joints, there is a risk of unclear arthroscopic vision and incomplete excision. [ 26 ] At the same time, there is a long clinical learning curve for arthroscopy, and there may be differences between different surgeons, leading to the possibility of misdiagnosis and incomplete excision during surgery.…”

“…About 10% of intra-articular OO patients are affected by this sort of tumor. The hip, elbow, and ankle are the usual sources of the tumor [ 7 ]. However, OO is capable of taking appearance or being covered up by various other conditions, and this may result in a prolonged diagnostic and therapeutic process, along with associated complications [ 8 ].…”

“…This case report proposes a novel technique utilizing the Medartis TriLock plate adapted for the middle phalanx, combined with the WALANT (wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet) approach, to address these challenges and improve patient recovery and joint function [ [1] , [2] , [3] ]. This joint is vital in gripping and is a major contributor to the overall digital function of the hand [ 4 , 5 ]. It is frequently subjected to injuries during sports activities that involve handling or interacting with a ball, exposing it to various forms of traumatic impacts.…”
