Osteopenia in pregnancy during long‐term heparin treatment: A radiological study post partum

Abstract: Summary. Osteopenia, sometimes with compression fractures of the spine, is a side‐effect of long‐term heparin treatment. The frequency is unknown. In this study, 70 women were given subcutaneous heparin as therapy for, or prophylaxis against, thromboembolism during pregnancy. All, except two, were examined by X‐ray of the spine and hip first week post partum. The duration of treatment and the dosage of heparin varied. There were 12 (17%) with obvious Osteopenia, including two women with multiple fractures of … Show more

“…39 However, more recent analyses 35,56 support the drug's safety and efficacy. Osteopenia induced by heparin has been reported in pregnancy, 57,58 although it is usually associated with the administration of at least 20,000 IU per day for more than six months. 35 The osteopenia appears to be reversible in most cases.…”

“…However, recently an osteoporotic fracture of the lumbar spine in a young patient treated with low-dose LMWH for 3 months has been reported [308]. Heparin-induced osteoporosis is usually reversible after discontinuation of heparin therapy [302,311,325,326].…”

“…It has been hoped that LMWHs will have fewer serious complications, including bleeding, 67-70 osteoporosis, [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78] and HIT, 79,80 when compared with unfractionated heparin. Evidence is accumulating that these complications are indeed less serious and less frequent with the use of LMWHs.…”
