Despite the abundant literature on limnic Cretaceous ostracode faunas, the database on mid-Late Cretaceous taxa is still scarce. The Songliao Basin in northeastern China preserves a diverse assemblage of ostracode fossils from the Santonian–Campanian Nenjiang and Sifangtai formations. This rather unique material is of major importance to comprehend Early to mid-Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Campanian) limnic ostracode faunas and therefore the evolution of Late Cretaceous basins in China. A study of this fauna was conducted to detail the taxonomy of ostracode species from members 1 and 2 of the Nenjiang and Sifangtai formations in the Songliao Basin. Well-preserved specimens of 14 ostracode species were recovered from samples of the ZKY2-1 well in southwestern Songliao Basin: Scabriculocypris liaukhenensis Liu in Netchaeva et al., 1959, Ilyocyprimorpha netchaevae Su in Netchaeva et al., 1959, Cypridea acclinia Netchaeva in Netchaeva et al., 1959, Cypridea cavernosa Galeeva, 1955, Cypridea gracile Netchaeva in Netchaeva et al., 1959, Cypridea lepida Ye in DOFEAD, 1976, Cypridea squalida Sou in Netchaeva et al., 1959, Fabaeformiscandona? Disjuncta (Hao in Hao et al., 1974), Lycopterocypris profunda Lübimova, 1956, Mongolocypris magna (Hou, 1958), Mongolocypris tera (Su in Netchaeva et al., 1959), Talicypridea obliquecostae (Szczechura and Błaszyk, 1970), Talicypridea reticulata (Szczechura, 1978) and Renicypris renalata (Su in Hao et al., 1974). Four of the species identified received emended descriptions and diagnoses. Other important results include the first discussion on sexual dimorphism in Cypridea acclinia and Fabaeformiscandona? disjuncta, the first study on the ontogeny of Ilyocyprimorpha netchaevae, and the reassignment of Cypridea liaukhenensis to the genus Scabriculocypris. Several species recorded herein are also found in other continental far-eastern Asian basins, while genera range from worldwide to far-eastern Asian distribution; these results support strong affinities among faunas of Mongolia, China, and Japan.

Dysodiles are finely laminated sedimentary rocks rich in organic matter and in exceptionally well-preserved fossils, hence their petroleum and palaeontological interest. However, few studies focused on the dysodiles of Lebanon, leaving their palaeontological content and their depositional environment largely unknown. Our previous investigations show a variety of well-preserved lacustrine fossils including ichthyofauna, chelonians, insects, plant debris, gastropods, palynomorphs and ostracods. The present study focuses on the ostracods of five sampling localities from the Lower Barremian of Lebanon. Being the most abundant fossils, ostracods raise some taphonomic and palaeoecological questions that may help us understand the depositional environment and enrich the story of these Early Barremian lakes. Faunal differences between the sampled sections provide clues to the specific characteristics of each lake. The abundance of 'butterfly' preservation of carapaces, together with the association of adults and juveniles, indicates calm depositional environments without post-mortem transport. The assemblages comprise ostracods with known swimming ability (Cyprois and Zonocypris) or that are thought to have been swimmers (Cypridea), while non-swimmers are absent, suggesting that nektobenthonic ostracods must have lived only in the shallow margins of the lakes or among floating vegetation because hypolimnion conditions were hostile to benthos. This study provides different scenarios on how this fauna ended up preserved in the laminated lake sediments. □ Black shales, Cretaceous, lake, micropaleontology, palaeoenvironment, taphonomy.

This work provides the detailed investigation (taxonomy, biostratigraphy, and paleoecology) of a nonmarine ostracod fauna from the Shinekhudag Formation in Gobi–Altai area, southwest Mongolia. The samples from two sections (Tsagaan Tsuvarga and Oshih Hollow East) yielded various ostracods assigned to nine species belonging to six genera: Cypridea verrucata Neustrueva, 1974, C. ihsienensis Hou, 1958, C. unicostata Galeeva, 1955, C. tumefacta Neustrueva, 1974, Yumenia cf. Y. oriformis Hou, 1958, Scabriculocypris subscalara Zhang and Chen in Ye et al., 2003, ?Trapezoidella sp., Candona sp., and Vlakomia ulanense Neustrueva, 1977. The biostratigraphic application of our taxonomic results suggests that the age of the Shinekhudag Formation is Barremian–Aptian. In addition, the ostracod fauna shows strong affinities to faunas from northeast China and potentially northwest China, providing evidence of faunal exchanges between these regions and southwest Mongolia. The new discovery of Vlakomia ulanense indicates that mid-Cretaceous (Albian) species in northeast China probably originated in Mongolia at the time of deposition of the Shinekhudag Formation. Two ostracod assemblages in the studied sections reflect that different paleoenvironment settings have existed during deposition; the Tsagaan Tsuvarga Section represents a shallow-littoral zone of athalassic (inland) saline lake under arid climate, and the dominance of cypridoideans of the Oshih Hollow East Section is indicative of ephemeral water bodies.
