Outbreak of Prototheca wickerhamii algaemia and sepsis in a tertiary care chemotherapy oncology unit

Abstract: Background: Prototheca is an emerging, opportunistic, pathogenic, zoonotic achlorophyllous green alga, expanding in pathogenicity and host range, causing localized and disseminated infections. This outbreak of Prototheca wickerhamii algaemia and sepsis in a tertiary care 30bedded chemotherapy oncology unit is the first human outbreak to the best of our knowledge. Methods: P. wickerhamii algaemia was confirmed on consecutive isolation. Person to person transmission was hypothesized considering all patients in th… Show more

“…[35][36][37][38] Capacity-building for regional laboratory services and outbreak preparedness are mandated for enhancing contingency and resilience capital of community-based health systems. [39][40][41] Typhoidal Salmonella has high epidemic potential amid the emergence of MDR and NARST, and thus forms an important threat in human congregations such as the Kumbh Mela in India, Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, and displaced migrant camps. [42][43][44] The overlapping epidemicity of Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A emphasizes a bivalent vaccine covering both as an apparently better choice than a monovalent vaccine in the control strategy of enteric fever.…”

“…The challenges faced at high altitudes in diagnosing, treating, and overall management of an outbreak cannot be overemphasized. 25 The origin of the outbreak, source/reservoir, exposure dynamics, mode of transmission, index-case, asymptomatic carrier state, appropriate diagnosis and therapy may not be discerned. Specific epidemiological studies are restricted by unpredictability and non-reproducibility due to fewer patients, the unavailability of a matched control group, the unavailability of screening modalities, variable disease dynamics, and prognosis to empirical therapy.…”
