“…Depression is not part of normal ageing, and reported risk factors for depression in older age include female gender, economic deprivation, onset of serious medical disorders, including dementia, poor health and functioning, bereavement and other life crises, and it may be co-morbid with some conditions (e.g., myocardial infarction) (Berkman et al, 1986;Bowling et al, 1996;Djernes, 2006;Hybels et al, 2006;Kennedy, Kelman, & Thomas, 1990;Phifer & Murrel, 1986;Raj, 2004;Stallones, Marx, & Garrity, 1990). While there is little robust, multilevel data on the influence of neighbourhood social capital on mental health in older age, Walters et al (2004) reported no independent associations between area deprivation and anxiety or depression, among their population sample aged 75þ, although higher population density was consistently associated with increased depression and anxiety.…”
