Outcome of Diseases of Pancreas in Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract

BACKGROUND There has been a meteoric rise in the fraction of patients who are presenting with the disorders of the pancreas, necessitating the need for increased awareness of the disease and treatment modalities of disorders of the pancreas, the appropriate modalities for diagnosis and the proper treatment protocols that have been utilized. METHODS This study was done among 60 out of 81 patients with various pancreatic diseases who were admitted and operated in the surgery department for two years (2017-2019). RESULTS There is an increased rate of pancreatic surgeries during this period as compared to the previous two years (2015-2017) as only 42 out of 60 were operated previously. There is also increased incidence of pancreatic diseases as reflected by the total number of admissions, which increased from 60 during the period of (2015-2017) to 81 during the period of (2017-2019). This is due to the increased incidence of alcoholism, smoking, gall stone diseases reinforced by studies done by Kontis V et al, 1 Hirota et al. 2 CONCLUSIONS Most cases of benign pancreatic disorders were identified between 3rd to 5th decades and pancreatic malignancies in 5th and 6th decades. More cases of pancreatic malignancies are being identified in resectable stages.
