Outcome of displaced supracondylar fractures in children after manipulation and backslab

Abstract: Aim: To assess the functional and cosmetic outcome of displaced supracondylar fractures in children treated by closed reduction and plaster backslab. Method: We retrospectively reviewed 53 patients with Gartland type II and type III fractures that were treated by closed reduction (Blount's technique) and immobilisation in a collar and cuff and above-elbow plaster backslab between December 2011 and May 2012. The mean age was 6.6 years. The mean follow-up time was 12 weeks (range, 6-20). All open injuries and un… Show more

“…Six patients (33.33%) presented with weak radial pulse with swollen elbow, under fluoroscopy emergency manipulative reduction with crossed k-wire fixation done, and limb regained perfusion. Two patients (5%) presented with preoperative ulnar nerve neuropraxia and two (5%) had iatrogenic nerve injury after 03 months they became fully recovered, which was similar to 2% to 6% reported in a literature6 . In this study, 2(5%) patients developed pin tract infections, healed after removal of k wire and oral antibiotics.…”

“…Our research further supports the fact that a good outcome can be obtained with this method of treatment. It was shown in this study that 95.24% of cases had Excellent to good result using Flynn's original criteria of assessment [11] with 7.3 months of average tracking [15]. None had varus deformity > 20°.…”

“…The carrying angle was identified and measured as formed between the axis of a radially deviated forearm and the axis of the humerus [16]. The change in the carrying angle and the loss of motion was determined by comparing the affected arm with the unaffected arm [17].…”
