Outcome of major cardiac injuries at a Canadian trauma center

Abstract: BackgroundCanadian trauma units have relatively little experience with major cardiac trauma (disruption of a cardiac chamber) so injury outcome may not be comparable to that reported from other countries. We compared our outcomes to those of other centers.MethodsRecords of patients suffering major cardiac trauma over a nine-year period were reviewed. Factors predictive of outcome were analyzed.ResultsTwenty-seven patients (11 blunt and 16 penetrating) with major cardiac trauma were evaluated. Injury severity s… Show more

“…The severity of injury of different organs could be estimated with various scores and classifications after a trauma (5,7). Successful correlations with survival in this scoring system have been shown in many studies (1,5,20). Although, HIS grade was statistically significantly correlated with mortality, LIS was not and PTTI scores were significantly higher in non-survivors compared to the survivors in the present study.…”

“…12 Alanezi et al reported on major cardiac injuries over a 9-year period and found 27 cases, of which 11 (40.7%) underwent an EDT. 13 Only one patient (9.1%) who underwent an EDT survived. 13 As previously mentioned, Passos et al reported on outcomes of EDTs at a large level 1 trauma centre in Toronto, Ontario.…”

“…6 The variables affecting the survival in penetrating cardiac injuries were investigated in many articles. [1][2][3][4][5][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Presence of life signs was very important for predicting the survival, whereas other factors like gunshot mechanism, left ventricle injury, multiple chamber injuries, and associated other organ injuries were significant only in some series.…”
