Outcomes and prognostic factors in gallbladder cancer: a single-centre experience

Abstract: Despite differences in the incidence in different geographical areas, gallbladder cancer appears to be fairly normally distributed in Western Pomerania, a predominantly rural area of Northeastern Germany. Coverage of incident cases in our catchment area was high. T stage, M stage and R stage were independent prognostic factors in our study. We conclude that, whenever possible, an R0 resection should be the surgical goal in all patients staged resectable before surgery, but heroic resections in patients with hi… Show more

“…The mean survival for this malignancy ranges from 5.2 to 24.4 mo, according to different reports. 9,[11][12][13] Most of these patients die from tumor metastasis and recurrence. Therefore, an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of GBC metastasis and recurrence is indispensable for the development of effective adjuvant therapy.…”

“…The poor prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma is not only because of its low radical resection rate but also its lack of sensitivity to chemotherapy and radiotherapy [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Therefore, novel therapeutic strategies are needed to improve patient outcomes [26].…”

“…Curative resection remains the only cure for this highly lethal malignancy. As a result, gallbladder carcinoma is associated with a very poor prognosis, and the overall survival rate for this malignancy ranges from 5.2 to 24.4 months [11][12][13]. Therefore, only a minority of patients are candidates for curative resection.…”

“…Although there have been advances in chemotherapy, the prognosis of GBC remains poor (6). The mean survival ranges between 5.2 and 24.4 months (710). The majority of patients with GBC succumb to metastasis and recurrence following surgery.…”
