“…MSM are disproportionally affected by mental health problems, a finding that has been consistent across research studies and has received increasing attention [ 38 40 ]. In the western-based literature, homosexual and bisexual men are reported to have higher risk for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation as compared with the general population [ 3 , 4 , 41 ]. A meta-analysis of studies of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals found a 2-fold elevated risk of experiencing a psychiatric disorder lasting up to 1 year (OR [odds ratio] = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.68–2.46) or a lifetime (OR = 2.41, 95% CI = 1.91–3.02) [ 42 ].…”

“…Previous studies have documented high prevalence of suicide in India in the general population, especially among men [61], and markedly high levels (45 %) of suicidality among MSM in particular [17]. Similarly, in other settings MSM have been identified at elevated risk for suicidality [62, 63]. While our study only assessed suicidal ideation instead of a full assessment of suicidality, our data point to a high vulnerability of MSM to suicide in India and the importance of a fuller investigation of suicidality among MSM in India and the potential use of the PHQ-9 as a preliminary indicator for further screening and prevention efforts.…”

“…An increasingly pressing but less studied mental health problem of MSM is suicidality, which is the likelihood of an individual's dying by suicide and usually referred to as suicidal thoughts and behaviors (Posner et al, 2007). Internationally, the lifetime prevalence for suicidal ideation among MSM ranges approximately between 20% and 50% (Guadamuz et al, 2014;Parker et al, 2015;Paul et al, 2002;Sivasubramanian et al, 2011). The 2015 report of the Chinese National Key Research Project "Risk Analysis and Strategic Prevention of HIV Transmission from MSM to the General Population in China," noted that 26% of MSM in China experienced suicidal ideation (Chen et al, 2015), much higher than the 3.9% for the overall population (Cao et al, 2015).…”
