Bamboo, a rapidly growing woody grass prevalent in pan-tropical zones, holds promising potential as a nature-based solution (NbS) for climate change mitigation. In this systematic review of 91 research articles, we critically assess the scope and constraints of bamboo’s role in mitigating climate change across three dimensions: as a carbon sink in biomass form, as carbon storage in bamboo products, and as a contributor to carbon project credits. Our analysis reveals that existing studies disproportionately focus on 36 limited species, such as Phyllostachys pubescens and Bambusa vulgaris, with geographic concentration in Asia (91%) and limited studies from Africa (7%) and South America (1%). While many studies emphasize the carbon-saving benefits of bamboo products compared with traditional goods, there is a noticeable gap in comprehensive evaluations of carbon pools from individual bamboo forests encompassing all product varieties. While bamboo forests offer significant carbon trading potential, their global role is restricted by the absence of internationally accepted methodologies and the presence of debates about classifying bamboo as a tree species. This extensive review highlights the multifaceted value of bamboo in climate change mitigation, thereby highlighting its significance as a critical component for informed policymaking and the development of sustainable practices in future climate strategies worldwide.

Bamboo invasion into broadleaf forests is a common phenomenon in karst areas; however, the effect of bamboo invasion on soil organic carbon (SOC) in karst areas and the mechanism of the effect are not clear. We selected the study site with broad-leaved forests (BF), mixed forests (MF), and pure bamboo (Indosasa shibataeoides McClure) forests (IF). Furthermore, we sampled the soil from 0 cm to 20 cm and 20 cm to 40 cm layers in the region and investigated the soil properties, organic carbon fractions, and microbial communities. At the same time, we sampled the litterfall layer of different stands and determined the biomass. The results showed that bamboo invasion increased the litterfall biomass per unit area of karst forest, increased the bulk weight of the 0–20 cm soil layer, and lowered the soil pH in the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil layers, bamboo invasion consistently increased the content of soil AN and AK, whereas the content of AP was significantly reduced after bamboo invasion. Both active organic carbon groups (MBC, DOC, and EOC) and passive organic carbon groups (Fe/Al-SOC and Ca-SOC) increased significantly after bamboo invasion. The bamboo invasion increased the diversity of soil microorganisms and bacterial communities; the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota increased in MF and IF, while the relative abundance of Firmicutes decreased in IF. The structure of fungal communities was altered during the bamboo invasion, with an increase in the relative abundance of Mortierellomycota and a decrease in the relative abundance of Basidiomycota at the level of fungal phyla. Partial least squares path modeling analysis identified bamboo invasion enhanced SOC sequestration mainly by increasing litterfall biomass and altering the structure of the fungal community, and the effect of bacteria on SOC was not significant. Our study suggests that bamboo invasion of broadleaf forests is more favorable to soil organic carbon sequestration in karst areas.

Bamboo forests in Colombia and the Andean region of South America represent high-value ecosystems that provide ecological and economic benefits with local and global impacts. One of the ecosystem services provided by these forests is associated with their capacity to store carbon. In this study, data collected from monitoring plots were used to estimate the carbon content in different pools. Bamboo biomass (Bba), tree biomass (Btree), litter (Cli) and soil organic carbon (SOC) were assessed. The approximate total ecosystem carbon stock (TECaprox) ranged from 198.4 Mg C ha−1 to 330.9 Mg C ha−1 and bamboo carbon Cba represents approximately 50%. In addition, considering the relevance of developing tools to facilitate bamboo inventory and biomass estimates, allometric equations (AE) to estimate bamboo aboveground biomass (AGB) were fitted using the diameter of culms at breast height (dbh) and the total culm length (l) as predictor variables. The fitted AEs included the weighted linear, weighted log-transformed and weighted nonlinear fixed effect models. To compliance the additivity of biomass components a simultaneous systems of biomass equations (seemingly unrelated regressions) were also fitted. The precision and accuracy were assessed considering the residual diagnostic plots and statistics, such as the root-mean-square error (RMSE), RMSE percentage error (RMSEPE) and the Furnival’s index (Fln) for weighted log-transformed models and cross-validation. The performance of the models was similar with an RMSE of approximately 10 kg and 26% of RMSEPE, with slightly lower error for the weighted log-transformed model for the fitting and validation phases. A proper performance was also evidenced for the simultaneous approach for predicting AGB. Bamboo forests showed high relevance as carbon sinks and therefore might be considered strategic tropical ecosystems for climate change mitigation. On the other hand, the fitted AE exhibited proper performance and therefore provided reliable possibilities for estimating the AGB of bamboo during inventories. For practical reasons, the use of models with dbh as a predictor variable is recommended.
