Outcomes of Microwave Ablation for Small Renal Masses: A Single Center Experience

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the safety of microwave ablation (MWA) as an emerging technology for treating small renal masses. Materials and Methods: Patients with renal masses treated at a high-volume center with MWA between March 2015 and June 2019 were retrospectively identified. Safety, changes in renal function, primary treatment efficacy, and the natural history of imaging characteristics of masses postablation were examined. Results: Forty-five patients underwent MWA during the study period. Median age was 7… Show more

“…However, the histologic diagnosis can be a false negative due to inadequate sampling. In this clinical setting, short-term follow-up is useful to differentiate post-ablation inflammation from LTP [ 19 20 21 ]. The former decreases in size or disappears, but the latter increases in size.…”

“…Microwave coagulation therapy is a modality that has had success with kidney and liver cancer ablation [ 64 ], but is still in preliminary testing for prostate cancer. Under MRI-guidance, needles are placed in the gland and microwave activation amplifies heat onto a specific site.…”

“…It has achieved high efficacy in the treatment of benign and malignant tumours of the liver, kidneys and lungs. 5 , 6 In addition, some scholars have noted that MWA can improve immunity and enhance antitumor ability. In recent years, MWA has been increasingly more widely used for the treatment of PTMC.…”
