“…35 Nowadays, in the phacorefractive age, cataract surgeons must be interested in further improving the outcomes of cataract surgery by decreasing symptoms such as burning or foreign body sensation and by improving the quality of vision after surgery, which is associated to ocular dryness. By aggressively treating the ocular surface after surgery (particularly but not only in patients with previous problems 36 ), we provide better patient comfort and visual acuity. We must inform patients about the possibility of ocular dryness symptoms and visual fluctuation after surgery, in order to avoid patient complaints about cataract surgery.…”

“…Most surgical procedures, especially surgical incisions that cause denervation of the cornea, also result in impaired epithelial wound healing, increased epithelial permeability, decreased epithelial metabolic activity and loss of cytoskeletal structures associated with cellular adhesion [5]. The changes in tBUT and Schirmer tests have been reported in previous studies [1,2,4,[9][10][11]. In our study, compared with before surgery, tBUT was markedly decreased at 3 days and slightly improved up to 3 months, but it was still lower than baseline at 3 months.…”

“…In moderate and severe cases, dry eye can impair the ability of patients to perform activities of daily living, impact work productivity, and influence mood and confidence (Friedman, 2010). Obviously, a high proportion of cataract patients who are candidates for cataract surgery have dry eye; furthermore, there are overwhelming evidences suggesting aggravation or Cataract Surgery 340 initiation of dry eye following cataract surgery (Cohen, 1982;Gharaee et al, 2009;Hardten, 2008;Insler et al, 1985;Jones and Maguire, 1992;Khanal et al, 2008;Ram et al, 2002;Ram et al, 1998;Roberts and Elie, 2007). So even following uneventful cataract extraction and vision improvement the patient could be unsatisfied.…”
