“…In people, extended pericardial catheter drainage is associated with a reduction in the recurrence of idiopathic and postoperative effusions by 44–71% . They are associated with a lack of malignant PE recurrence as well . The mechanism of this is postulated to be in fenestration of the pericardium by persistence of the catheter.…”

“…In a large series from our institution, which consisted of 500 consecutive cases, 5 (1.5%) cases had major complications including pneumothoraces (n = 3), RV erosion secondary to a frayed sheath (n = 1), and infection (n = 1) with no reported mortality. Minor complications including uncomplicated ventricular puncture and catheter occlusion occurred in 12 (3.5%) patients 1 . Similarly, other large studies have demonstrated the safety of percutaneous pericardiocentesis with no reported mortality 2–4 …”

“…Among 275 patients with malignancy and pericardial effusion followed between 1979 and 1998 at our institution, the primary malignancy was lung (38%), followed by breast (23%), and hematologic cancer (18%). The remaining cases (21%) were due to adenocarcinoma of varying primary sites 1 …”

“…Percutaneous balloon percardiotomy (PBP) has been used for treatment of recurrent pericardial effusion. Small, single‐center retrospective studies have shown that pericardiocentesis in patients with malignant pericardial effusion have recurrence rates up to 90% . These earlier studies were used to establish pericardiotomy as the definitive treatment.…”
