Outcomes of Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with and without Association of Inverted Papilloma: A Multi-Institutional Analysis

Abstract: Although SCC with and without IP association are considered different diseases, their demographics and outcomes seem similar. Nodal metastasis was noted to be higher in the SCC cohort, which may indicate different tumor biology. Further study is warranted.

“…No differences in the frequency of NSCLC with EGFR exon 20 insertion mutations have been observed between Asian and Caucasian patients . Additionally, the frequency of clinicopathological ISP‐associated SNSCCs appears to be independent from geographical differences; the frequency has been reported to be 24% and 25% in two large studies including more than 80 patients from United States and South Korea, respectively . Similar to these previous studies, our study, that examined a large cohort of Japanese patients, also identified clinicopathological ISP‐associated SNSCCs in 17 (21%) of 80 SNSCCs.…”

“…Endoscopy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are usually not able to determine whether the SCC arose from the malignant transformation of existing IPs . IP‐associated SCC is most often diagnosed at an advanced stage and has a poor prognosis . In this study, data from a cohort of patients with this unusual sinonasal tumor were analyzed for prognostic factors and survival outcomes.…”

“…The available published studies provided conflicting conclusions. Some reports have shown improved survival outcomes for IP‐SNSCC patients, 6,7 whereas others suggested outcomes similar to those for DN‐SNSCC patients 8,9 …”
