Outdoor cultivation of a novel isolate of the microalgae Scenedesmus sp. and the evaluation of its potential as a novel protein crop

Abstract: A Danish strain of the green microalgae Scenedesmus sp. was isolated, identified and characterized with respect to productivity under outdoor cultivation conditions at northern latitudes. The algae were cultivated outdoors in Denmark in closed tubular photobioreactors using only sunlight, simple inorganic nutrients and under ambient temperatures. The biomass composition was evaluated in terms of protein content and quality. The average volumetric and areal biomass productivity obtained for the Scenedesmus sp. … Show more

“…Isolating and cultivating local species better adapted to local environmental conditions can improve stability ( Olsen et al, 2021 ). Interestingly, little research has investigated the potential of seasonally rotating several strains or species although such approach could enable large gains in yearly productivities ( Borowitzka, 2013c ; Sun et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Digestion was carried out on a Labtec DT 220 (FOSS A/S, Hillerød, Denmark) digestor, while a Tecator Kjeltec 8200 (FOSS A/S, Hillerød, Denmark) unit was used for distillation. Crude protein was calculated by multiplying total nitrogen by the traditional protein conversion factor of 6.25 [29].…”

“…Because of their high content in high-quality protein, oils, pigments and vitamins, microalgae are a valuable plant-based food source (Ampofo & Abbey, 2022). Microalgae may have a protein content as high as 50-60% (on a dry matter basis) and a complete amino acid profile containing all the essential amino acids the human body is unable to produce and, therefore, must obtain through the diet (Becker, 2007;Olsen et al, 2021;Wu, 2009). The content of essential amino acids in certain microalgae, such as Arthrospira sp., can be superior to that of conventional crops like soybean, maize, and wheat (Van Vliet et al, 2015).…”
