Output Filter Design for Grid-Tied Cascaded Multi-Level Inverters Based on Novel Mathematical Expressions

Abstract: Renewable energy resources, which are widely used in modern power systems, require power electronic-based converters to couple with the external grid. The main impact of utilizing power electronic converters on the grid power quality is harmonic generation produced by their switching process. Multilevel inverters are outstanding solutions to significantly reduce the voltage stress and harmonics. In this paper, novel mathematical expressions are derived to calculate the maximum ripple of the inverter output cur… Show more

“…Filter inductance (L flt) can be designed from the permissible current ripple in the output as given below 27 : rightLfltleft=Vdc8(N1)2fswΔiac,max where N is the total number of output voltage levels, f sw is the switching frequency, and normalΔnormaliac, max is the maximum ripple in the output current. The cut‐off frequency (f sw) requirement determines the filter capacitance (C flt) size, as given below Cflt14πfcutoff2Lflt …”

“…For example, these harmful sub-products sometimes cause a failure of winding insulations and leak current in motor drive applications [4]- [6]. The noise issue has a significant effect on the performance of systems, a filter design is still important to eliminate such noise and harmonics even in the case of using multi-level converters [7] [8]. Due to the advent of widebandgap (WBG) devices with fast switching characteristics, this issue is spotlighted.…”

“…This topology processes the power twice (two-stage inverters), which are extensively studied and adds many limitations for the component count and the control complexity. During the last decade, many topologies have been introduced using the same approach, such as switched-capacitor based inverters [18][19][20][21][22][23][24], Z source inverters [25][26][27][28][29], and multi-level inverters [30][31][32].…”
