Ovarian cancer: diagnostic accuracy and tumor types distribution in East Africa compared to North America

Abstract: Background: Ovarian cancer is a spectrum of several histologically distinct tumor types that differ in etiology, response to therapy, and prognosis. In resource-limited settings, the diagnosis of ovarian cancer can be challenging. This study describes the distribution of ovarian cancer tumor types in East Africa as well as assessing the diagnostic accuracy by using contemporary methods. Methods: Data from 210 women identified from the records with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in a period of 15 years were incl… Show more

“…Ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cause of female cancer morbidity (3.7%) and fifth for mortality (4.2%) on the continent. Generally ovarian cancer carries a high risk of late presentation and poor outcomes, but this risk is worse in Africa where diagnostic and treatment capacity is limited 9 10. In modern practice, radiotherapy is typically not employed in the management of ovarian cancer, except for localized palliative treatment 11…”

“…[4] Traditional diagnostic methods commonly used in SSA, such as tissue biopsies, are invasive, costly, and require specialized medical facilities and expertise. [5] These barriers further impede early detection efforts. However, there is hope in the form of liquid biopsy (LB), an emerging noninvasive diagnostic technique.…”

“…It contained multiple histological types; the majority was classified as high grade serous (accounting for 30-70%); while less common types included endometrioid (10-20%), mucinous (5-20%), clear cell (3-10%), and undifferentiated (1%) types. [4][5][6] Different histological types might have different pathogenesis, biological behavior, natural history, treatment strategies, and prognosis. Different molecular background might determine different biological behavior, therapeutic sensitivity, and prognosis; BRCA1/2 germline mutations were the strongest known genetic risk factors for EOC and were found in 6-15% of women with EOC.…”
