Robust sex difference among humans regarding psychiatry- and pain-related behaviors is being researched; however, the use of female mice in preclinical research is relatively rare due to an unchecked potential behavioral variation over the estrous cycle. In the present study, a battery of psychiatry- and pain-related behaviors are examined under physiological condition in female C57BL/6J mice over different estrous cycle phases: proestrus, estrous, metestrous, diestrous. Our behavioral results reveal that there is no significant difference over different phases of the estrous cycle in social interaction test, sucrose preference test, tail suspension test, open field test, marble burying test, novelty-suppressed feeding test, Hargreaves thermal pain test, and Von Frey mechanical pain test. These findings implicate those psychiatry- and pain-related behaviors in normal female C57BL/6J mice appear to be relatively consistent throughout the estrous cycle; the estrous cycle might not be a main contributor to female C57BL/6J mice’s variability of behaviors.

Introduction: It has long been known that Methamphetamine (MA), as a psychostimulant, leads to long-lasting cognitive deficits. Previous studies have shown that lithium, a mood stabilizer, could facilitate cognitive ability in most of brain diseases. In current study the effects of lithium on spatial memory, hippocampal apoptosis and brain edema in METH-exposed rats are investigated. Methods: The present study 32 Wistar rats were used to examine the effects of lithium on spatial memory by the Morris water maze, hippocampal apoptosis using the TUNEL assay, and brain edema following MA administrations. Results: The findings indicated that treatment with lithium significantly ameliorated spatial learning and memory impairment in MA-treated rats. In addition, the findings showed that treatment with lithium significantly reduced brain edema and apoptosis in the CA1 neurons in MA -exposed rats. Conclusion: The results show that treatment with lithium can partially ameliorate the MA –induced neurocognitive deficits in rats, which may be related to its protective effect in the hippocampus.

Background: Separation of pups from their dam during the infancy not only has detrimental effects on the pups' brain but also affects dams' behavior. Postpartum stress may affect mothers' cognitive functions. In the present study, by using a 180 min/day maternal separation (MS) paradigm, we assessed anxiety-like behavior (in the elevated plus maze) and locomotor activity (in the open eld) of rat dams which experienced separation from postnatal day (PND) 1 until weaning. Since no study has ever investigated MS effects on spatial learning and memory of dams in the Morris water maze, we tried for the rst time to clarify whether such separation impairs dam's performance in the Morris water maze.Methods:We assessed dams' behavior at three time points; 24 hours, 1 week and 1 month after weaning.Therefore, the six groups consisted of control (CTRL); 24h, 1week and 1month and MS; 24h, 1week and 1month was allocated in this study.Results: Our results revealed that although MS-24h and MS-1week groups had intact locomotor activity, MS-1month group showed less locomotor activity in the open eld. Moreover, MS induced anxiety-like behavior was more pronounced in MS-1week and MS-1month dams. Spatial learning and memory was also impaired only in MS-1month dams.Conclusions: We can conclude that MS induces cognitive impairments in dam that may appear not immediately after the separation, but a few weeks after such stressful event.
