Ovarian Transcriptome Analysis of Vitellogenic and Non-Vitellogenic Female Banana Shrimp (Fenneropenaeus merguiensis)

Abstract: The banana shrimp (Fenneropenaeus merguiensis) is one of the most commercially important penaeid species in the world. Its numbers are declining in the wild, leading to a loss of broodstock for farmers of the shrimp and a need for more successful breeding programs. However, the molecular mechanism of the genes involved in this shrimp’s ovarian maturation is still unclear. Consequently, we compared transcriptomic profiles of ovarian tissue from females in both the vitellogenic stage and the non-vitellogenic sta… Show more

“…In crustacean species, a neuroparsin-like peptide (MeNPLP) which is produced by the hepatopancreas and has been reported to induce VG expression in M. ensis ( 65 ). Transcriptomic analysis of Fenneropenaeus merguiensis (the banana shrimp) ovary shows that the expression of a neuroparsin precursor is higher in the vitellogenic stage compared to that in the non-vitellogenic stage ( 70 ). In the present study, we showed that Maj-NPLP has a stimulatory effect on VG synthesis in the ovary ( Figure 6A ).…”

“…Short-read sequencing (Illumina or 454) has been used to produce transcriptomes of some shrimp species, including L. vannamei 17 , 18 , 33 40 , Fenneropenaeus merguiensis 41 , 42 , Macrobrachium rosenbergii 43 , Triops newberryi 44 , T. longicaudatus 45 , Pandalus latirostris 46 , Fenneropenaeus chinensis 47 , Palaemon serratus 48 , and Penaeus monodon 49 . The average lengths of transcripts obtained in these studies were ~306–1,027 bp.…”

“…Fm‐15 is a microsatellite primer (Fm15_ATC7, GenBank: OM640622) of F. merguiensis , and was designed based on the results of transcriptome data analysis (Saetan et al, 2016). The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) from F. merguiensis (GenBank: OM257430) was designed based on highly conserved regions of COI genes (Folmer et al, 1994).…”
