An 18‐month‐old female German Shepherd dog, previously reported to be spayed, presented to a referral clinic with a history of progressive haemorrhagic vulvar discharge resulting in clinical anaemia. An abdominal ultrasound showed an enlarged uterus and a retained right ovary; vaginoscopy revealed no obvious haemorrhage from the vagina or cervix, so the dog underwent exploratory laparotomy for ovariectomy and hysterectomy. Prior to surgery, the dog received a 15 ml/kg packed red blood cell transfusion and post‐operatively was given fresh frozen plasma due to significant blood loss into the uterus. Histopathology was consistent with cystic endometrial hyperplasia, suppurative metritis and pyometra. A uterine culture grew Escherichia coli. The dog ultimately made a full recovery.

Resumo A piometra é uma enfermidade endotelial que acomete com mais frequência as fêmeas adultas e ativas reprodutivamente. Caracteriza-se por inflamação e acúmulo de exsudato na cavidade uterina que geralmente está associada a infecções bacterianas. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar o perfil de resistência de isolados de Escherichia coli a partir do conteúdo uterino de 42 fêmeas caninas, atendidas no Setor de Cirurgia de Pequenos Animais do Hospital de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Federal da Bahia, com diagnóstico de piometra. Para a realização da análise bacteriológica, uma amostra do conteúdo uterino foi obtida imediatamente após o ato cirúrgico de ovariosalpingohisterectomia terapêutica (OSH) e encaminhada para o laboratório. Após análise microbiológica observou-se uma predominância da bactéria Escherichia coli em 40,5% (15/37). As cepas de Escherichia coli isoladas apresentaram os maiores índices de resistência aos antimicrobianos eritromicina (93,3%), azitromicina (80%), ampicilina, amoxacilina e cefalotina (40% cada). Tal estudo reforça a necessidade da realização do exame microbiológico com finalidade epidemiológica e correta aplicação terapêutica, evitando, com isso, a utilização indiscriminada de antimicrobianos e potencial surgimento de estirpes multirresistentes.

Traumatic paracostal hernia is classified as an abdominal hernia that protrudes from the abdomen to a non physiologic space over the ribs. Treatment requires surgical reconstruction of the disrupted musculature in the thoracoabdominal region. Laparoscopic paracostal herniorrhaphy was performed in an eightmonth-old male Teckel, presented after a car accident injury. A three-portal laparoscopic access was used for definitive diagnosis and hernia correction. After traction of the herniated omentum, a thoracoabdominal communication caused a left side pneumothorax, which was successfully drained with a chest tube placement. The herniorrhaphy was accomplished with intracorporeal sutures by a combination of Ford interlocking and cross mattress patterns. The postoperative period was uneventful. The laparoscopic paracostal herniorrhaphy was satisfactory, allowing both diagnosis and correction of the paracostal defect, showing to be a feasible alternative to the open surgery.
