Ovary Peltate Trichomes of Zeyheria montana (Bignoniaceae): Developmental Ultrastructure and Secretion in Relation to Function

Abstract: The continuous presence and activity of peltate trichomes on the ovary of Z. montana from early budding through to flowering and fruiting set, and its main chemical components, alkaloids and terpenes, suggest that they serve a protective function and are not related to the floral nectar source or to improving nectar quality.

“…The ultrastructural features observed in the epithelial cells of P. pubescens, such as the proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum and polymorphic plastids, are common characteristics described for oil cells in other species (Paiva and Machado 2007;Teixeira and Rocha 2009;Rodrigues et al 2011b). Proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum and plastids without grana are associated with lipid synthesis (Fahn 1979;2000) and have been described for many glands secreting lipophilic substances, mainly monoterpenes (Cheniclet and Carde 1985;Monteiro et al 1999;Turner et al 1999;Machado et al 2006;Paiva et al 2008). Lipophilic droplets were observed in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells and in the lumen of the secretory cavities in P. pubescens, by means of TEM.…”

“…Z. montana leaf and root extracts are conventionally used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers, skin tumours and inflammatory diseases (Jacome et al 1999, Bertoni et al 2007). Phytochemical analyses of Z. montana leaf extract showed the presence of terpenoids and flavonoids, while root and stem extracts are particularly rich in lapachol (Almeida et al 1990, Machado et al 2006. Indeed, the amount of lapachol produced by Z. montana is about 19 times higher than in Tabebuia avallenedae, a plant species also from the Bignoniaceae family and traditionally known as the main source of this compound (Almeida et al 1990, Jacome et al 1999.…”
