Over 75 years of zooplankton data from Australia

Abstract: Abstract. Zooplankton are the key trophic link between primary producers and fish in pelagic ecosystems. Historically, there are few zooplankton time series in Australia, with no data sets longer than two years prior to 2008. Here we compile 98 676 abundance records of more than 1000 zooplankton taxa from unpublished research cruises, student projects, published literature, and the recent Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). This data set covers the entire coastal and shelf region of Australia and dates … Show more

“…All size spectrum data have been lodged with the Australian Zooplankton Database, curated by CSIRO [ 28 ]. Following a two-year moratorium, these data will be openly accessible to the research community through the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN).…”

“…In addition to specific data queries for NRS data that can be generated through the AODN, there are several significant compilations of historical data from the Australian region that help put the IMOS plankton data into a longer-term and broadscale context. These include historic phytoplankton species data (the Australian Phytoplankton Database; Davies et al, 2016), historic chlorophyll a data (the Australian Chlorophyll Database; (Davies et al, 2018), historic zooplankton species data (the Australian Zooplankton Database; (Davies et al, 2014), and historic zooplankton biomass data (the Australian Zooplankton Biomass Database; currently under development with records from the NRS 5 and Continuous Plankton Recorder 6 available via the AODN). These compilations and all associated ancillary IMOS data from the NRS are publicly available from the AODN with a Creative Commons BY licence, Table 1. with acknowledgement of the data source a requirement.…”
