Over-expression of BcFLC1 from non-heading Chinese cabbage enhances cold tolerance in Arabidopsis

Abstract: A gene (named BcFLC1) homologous to the AtFLC gene, which encodes a floral repressor, was isolated from the nonheading Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis) cv. NJ074. The gene showed high similarity to AtFLC. For studying the gene function, we designed to introduce the BcFLC1 gene into Arabidopsis thaliana. The results showed that BcFLC1 had effects on flowering time similar to AtFLC. We also found that Arabidopsis cold-tolerance was enhanced by BcFLC1 overexpression. Under low temperature s… Show more

“…Different letters within each row indicate significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) according to the LSD test. Stresses increase the production of ROS, and the accumulation of MDA is often used as an indicator of lipid peroxidation (Liu et al 2013). The present study shows that the cold stress significantly elevated the MDA content and O 2 .production rate relative to the control (Table 1).…”

“…Proline is one of the most important organic osmolytes in plant cells and is rapidly accumulated in plants after cold stress (Liu et al, 2009;Liu et al, 2013). Glutamic acid can act as the precursor of proline (Munns, 2005;Sharma and Dietz, 2006).…”

“…Plant flowering is affected by many factors, among which temperature and light play essential roles [ 9 ]. Vernalization pathways are extensive flowering pathways in crucifers, whose flowering requires a low temperature [ 20 ]. Nevertheless, temperature is not the only factor that affects the flowering of crucifers.…”

“…Chinese cabbages and turnips are mostly late-flowering types that need long-term vernalization to promote flowering. A low temperature is needed for the flowering of NHCC, whose budding, bolting, and flowering time are affected by the site, temperature, and time of vernalization treatment [ 20 ]. Previous studies have mainly focused on the molecular mechanism of genes during bolting and flowering in NHCC.…”
