Overall Influence of Dedicated Lanes for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles on Freeway Heterogeneous Traffic Flow

Abstract: With the development of autonomous driving and communication technology, the heterogeneous traffic flow by combining connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and manually driven vehicles (MVs) will appear on the freeway in the near future. It is expected that CAVs can improve the freeway capacity and reduce vehicle exhaust emissions, but sharing the same road by CAVs and MVs will cause certain interference to CAVs. In order to reduce the negative influence of the heterogeneous traffic flow, setting up CAV dedi… Show more

“…The results highlight that establishing exclusive lanes for CAVs at lower MPR can adversely impact the flow of traffic on freeways. However, optimal outcomes are observed when the CAV penetration rate surpasses 60% and the density remains at 40 vehicles per kilometer per lane or higher, making the adoption of CAV dedicated lanes the most effective choice [12,13,30]. Additional microscopic studies conducted by Talebpour et al [31], Hamad & Alozi [2] and Kang et al [29] also concur with the observation that the effectiveness of dedicated lanes is mainly influenced by MPRs.…”
