Overall Reliability of the Concrete Columns in Case of Stability Loss

Abstract: The European standard EN1992-1-1 shows a significant lack of an overall reliability in cases when loss of stability of concrete columns precedes reaching of resistance in a critical cross-section. The columns, subjected to axial force and bending moment, experimentally tested in the laboratory of Faculty of Civil Engineering SUT in Bratislava, were designed so that the loss of stability occurs at the concrete strain about 1.5 ‰ on the compressed edge of a critical cross-section.

“…As a part of the preparation of the experiment, we had asked numerous experts around Europe to predict the behaviour of the column during the test with the nonlinear method. A similar prediction was also performed [7] in the previous research [4], [5]. The aim of this prediction was to ask experts with experiences for their results.…”

“…Second order effect can be very large due to increase of eccentricity, so the stability failure of compressed concrete members can occur inside the design interaction diagram M-N of a cross-section much earlier than design resistance in critical crosssection is reached (force N Rd(c) in Fig. 1) [3,4,5,6]. Using the general non-linear analysis [7,8], as defined in [1] clause 5.7 (4) P "the use of material characteristics which represents the stiffness in a realistic way but takes account of the uncertainties of failure, shall be used when using non-linear analysis" demands to use mean values of the material properties.…”

“…Die Bestimmung des charakteristischen Werts aus den Versuchsergebnissen sowie die direkte Bestimmung des Bemessungswerts erfolgten mit einem FORM‐Sensitivitätsfaktor auf der Widerstandsseite von α R = 0,8 und einem Zielwert des Zuverlässigkeitsindex von β = 4,7. Vergleich zwischen Bemessungsverfahren nach [1] siehe auch [23–25].…”
