Overcoming Barriers for Clinical Research of Acupuncture

Abstract: Acupuncture is increasingly being used in the management of a wide range of symptoms. Despite decades of acupuncture research, a significant gap remains in translating evidence into specific and clear clinical guidelines for acupuncture practice. In this article, the authors discuss the gap between acupuncture research and clinical practice and exploring options to overcome the limitations of current clinical research of acupuncture.

“…As reflected by our data, there's increasing interest in applying acupuncture in head and neck cancer [38,72,85]. Although a detailed description is not within the scope of this work, our findings indirectly confirm the shortcomings bound with performing clinical research in the field of acupuncture [50,[86][87][88]. In spite of the methodological rigorousness based on a PICO-literature search, the large heterogeneity found in the retrieved data restrained us from providing any definitive recommendation on the role of acupuncture in the field of HNSCC.…”

“…Consequently, explanatory clinical trials have been unable to establish the exact efficacy of acupuncture 5. The methodology of acupuncture clinical trials has been continuously discussed, and researchers have tried to report reliable results for decision-makers 6 7. Alternatively, pragmatic acupuncture trials designed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments in real-world practice conditions have been conducted, and several studies have tried to show clinical benefits of acupuncture over conventional treatments even though the mechanism and specific efficacy could not be verified 8…”
