Overcoming Global Food Security Challenges through Science and Solidarity

Abstract: The world faces formidable, but manageable, challenges in achieving food security in a world growing beyond 9 billion people in the coming decades. Five big challenges will necessitate shifting innovation strategy to place greater emphasis on sustainable increases in diet quality, on total factor productivity ‐ not just crop yield ‐ growth, on social protection programs, on Africa, on post‐farmgate agri‐food value chains, on risk management, and on reducing the land and water footprint of food production. We m… Show more

“…First, the emblematic AFS technologies of every era -for example, hybrid seed and salt iodization roughly a century ago, Green Revolution and then transgenic cereal varieties in the late twentieth centurywould probably have failed to scale and achieve impact without less-celebrated, ancillary policies and sociocultural accelerators. Rural infrastructure, agricultural extension and secure land tenure were essential, as were adequate social protections for farmers or workers threatened by transformation 5,6 . Broad AFS stakeholder participation is essential to co-create the right bundle for a specific time and place.…”

“…Innovations around food safety are being developed at an unprecedented rate, some of which could be deployed in the next decade (Barrett, 2020;Robert, 2020;Siegrist and Hartmann, 2020). For instance, plant-based packaging is "the already ready technology" that is available in many LMICs and the expansion and improvement in this approach could booster progress toward safer and more sustainable food system.…”
