“…However, there is concern that the demand for highly educated labour has not kept pace with supply, giving rise to the problem of over-education. Workers are considered overeducated if their qualifications exceed those required for the job (Groot and van den Brink, 2000;McGuinness, 2006). This paper adds to the existing literature by providing an assessment of the potential drivers of overeducation across regions and countries.…”

“…Thus, while we know much about the magnitude of overeducation effects on variables such as earnings, job satisfaction and career mobility (Battu, Belfield and Sloane (1999) and Dolton and Vignoles (2000), Peiró et al (2010), McGuinness (2003), McGuinness and Sloane (2011)), there is much less understanding of the structural factors that drive the overeducation phenomenon itself. Hartog (2000, p. 134) suggests that "the strong expansion of participation in education has outpaced the increase in the demanded levels of education".…”

“…A first explanation suggests that the educational expansion process has watered down both the aforementioned allocation and socialization functions of education. From the 1960s onward, participation in higher education has increased substantially (Groot & Van den Brink, 2000). In many European countries, this massive growth in tertiary education has not been accompanied by an equivalent upgrade to the labor market (Bracke et al, 2013;Bracke et al, 2014).…”

“…Merits and limitations of the various subjective and objective measures of over-education have been debated within the literature (Cohn and Kahn, 1995;Chevalier, 2003 among others), however, Groot and van den Brink (2000) demonstrate that subjective measures, are less likely to provide biased estimates of the incidence of over-education.…”
