Overexpression of miR-92a correlates with tumor metastasis and poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract: This study revealed that miR-92a overexpression was correlated with specific colorectal cancer biopathologic features, such as TNM stage, lymph node and distant metastases, and poor survival of the patients, indicating that miR-92a may serve as a molecular prognostic marker for colorectal cancer and disease progression.

“…Of importance, miR-92a was upregulated in LARC specimens and correlated inversely with the expression levels of its putative targets IQGAP2 and KLF4. These findings are consistent with previous work suggesting an oncogenic role of miR-92a in colorectal cancer (CRC) (Tsuchida et al, 2011;Yamada et al, 2013;Zhou et al, 2013).…”

“…In a study recruited 40 colorectal adenocarcinoma patients and 40 control subjects, expression levels of serum miR-21 were measured using qRT-PCR assay, the results showed high expression level of serum miR-21 was associated with high clinical stages in the patients. Similar results were found in miR-29a in a study recruited 100 sera of patients with CRC and 30 sera of healthy donors [37]. Some miRNAs can distinguish TNM stage in CRC tissue samples, but failed in circulating miRNAs.…”

“…Recently published reports highlight their oncogenic and prognostic potential. For instance, miR-92a promotes esophageal cancer cell migration and invasion in vitro, and high expression of miR-92a correlates with lymph node metastases and poor overall survival in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma (44)(45)(46). Similarly, miR-18b overexpression promotes proliferation and loss of cell adhesion, and elevated levels of this miR correlates with reduced relapse-free survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (47).…”
