Overview of bituminous mixtures made with recycled concrete aggregates

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t sRecycled concrete aggregates (RCA) have poor quality than natural aggregates. A review on the properties of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) with RCA is conducted. Most studies report a high stripping potential of these mixtures. Several treatments help mitigate its unsatisfactory moisture damage resistance. Test stretches of HMA with RCA exhibited good performance. a b s t r a c tRecycled concrete aggregates (RCA) appear to be suitable materials to use in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) for flexible road paveme… Show more

“…This research area has already been explored and a higher rate of success was achieved with other construction materials such as concrete [14][15][16] and HMA [17][18][19], and a study of mixtures with asphalt emulsion was also initiated [20][21][22].…”

“…Road pavements are transport infrastructures built with different types of hot mix asphalt (HMA), namely mixtures made of aggregates and bitumen, mixed at temperatures higher than 150 • C. In order to withstand traffic loads and environmental conditions, such infrastructures have to be properly designed in terms of their thickness and material properties. With respect to the composition and mechanical characteristics of HMAs, experimental methods are currently used to design and optimize such bituminous mixtures [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Particularly, for what concerns the bitumen content identification and the mixtures' performance evaluation, quite onerous laboratory tests are necessary; moreover, such experimental procedures require experienced and skilled technicians.…”

“…There are two main areas in the construction sector, from which the concrete recyclate is obtained, the road construction and the civil engineering. The highest level of recycling is in the field of road construction because the existing road construction can be processed directly on site using mobile recycling units and reused in the construction of a new one [3,4]. In other cases, the old concrete is taken to a landfill or recycling facility.…”
