Overview of Composite Metal Foams and Their Properties and Performance

Abstract: This paper reviews the background and evolution of composite metal foam (CMF) from its inception until now. A broad understanding of the processing and basic mechanical, microstructural, and physical properties of different types of composite metal foams is discussed in the first part of the paper. In the second part, some recent studies on high strain rate properties, ballistic performance, radiation attenuation, and thermal properties of composite metal foams are discussed and compared with other bulk and co… Show more

“…Finally, dynamic compressive behaviour of novel cellular materials, e.g. functionally graded [82-84, 293, 294] and hierarchical [85][86][87] cellular materials, and cellular composites [295][296][297], as well as hypervelocity compressive behaviour [9,10] and multiaxial compression (or combined loading), deserve further research.…”

“…"Closed cell metal foam was first announced in 1926 by M.A. DeMeller in his French Patent 615,147" [24].Composite metal foams are lightweight, reduce collision penetration and can cope with fire temperatures twice that of the metals of which they are comprised [25]. Robust metal-ceramic foam forms a part of the hulls and superstructures of many boats and ships already afloat upon the world's mutable ocean as well as our planet's navigable lakes and rivers [26].…”

“…For a different type of syntactic foams, the so-called composite metal foams as developed by Neville and Rabiei based on metallic hollow spheres [ 97 , 98 , 99 ], the adverse effect of hollow spheres on matrix porosity levels is believed to be somewhat alleviated by the expansion of gases within the hollow spheres, through which a certain level of pressure is exerted on the matrix between spheres during sintering. Densification is assumed to be supported by this effect.…”
