Overview of density pedestal structure: role of fueling versus transport

Abstract: How much of the density pedestal structure is determined by fueling versus transport is still an open question. In most current tokamaks, the scrape-off layer is not opaque enough to screen the neutrals and limit their penetration past the separatrix. As such, recycled neutrals and additional gas puffing can directly affect the pedestal structure through ionization. However, in ITER and other future burning plasma magnetic confinement devices, the ionization source will be pushed further out into the scrape-of… Show more

“…The connection of n e,ped to n e,sep is indirect, and sensitive to the no-ELM regime [as evidenced by Fig. 12(a)] as well as the opacity of the pedestal to neutral fueling 330 . High p ped is predicted (based on peeling-ballooning stability calculations 331 ) to be accessible via large size, high-field, and/or strong shaping.…”

“…This is not surprising, since the edge E×B shear layer in H-mode is much stronger than its L-mode counterpart. Of course, the physics of the HDL is intimately connected to that of fuelling and pedestal profile formation [70]. Candidate explanations of the HDL include ballooning instability at the separatrix [67].…”

“…In other current devices, neutral penetration is generally expected to be significantly higher than on C-Mod, hence making the impact of charge exchange even more significant, often also much further inside of the pedestal. This significantly differentiates analysis of today's experiments from predictions of future devices, where neutral penetration is expected to be lower [3]. In Ref.…”
