Water management is paramount in countries with water scarcity. This also affects agriculture, as a large amount of water is dedicated to that use. The possible consequences of global warming lead to the consideration of creating water adaptation measures to ensure the availability of water for food production and consumption. Thus, studies aimed at saving water usage in the irrigation process have increased over the years. Typical commercial sensors for agriculture irrigation systems are very expensive, making it impossible for smaller farmers to implement this type of system. However, manufacturers are currently offering low-cost sensors that can be connected to nodes to implement affordable systems for irrigation management and agriculture monitoring. Due to the recent advances in IoT and WSN technologies that can be applied in the development of these systems, we present a survey aimed at summarizing the current state of the art regarding smart irrigation systems. We determine the parameters that are monitored in irrigation systems regarding water quantity and quality, soil characteristics and weather conditions. We provide an overview of the most utilized nodes and wireless technologies. Lastly, we will discuss the challenges and the best practices for the implementation of sensor-based irrigation systems.

Aside from their physical exterior/interior design, the energy demands of industrial buildings are strongly related to how they are used. It follows that the behaviour of the occupants contributes and is related to the energy consumption of a building. In a hospital, this could mean equipment usage, heating, water and so on. This implies that energy consumption in a specific area may be measured as a function of occupancy, making occupancy monitoring an important part of an organisation's energy management plan. This paper presents the design, implementation and testing of an Occupancy Monitoring Unit (OMU), based on thermal imaging technology, to provide occupancy data on individual selected wards/areas of Medway NHS Foundation Trust (MWNFT). The paper also presents successful tests performed to assess the functionality of the OMU in counting people and identifying the direction of motion. The results show the potential for the OMU to count individual people as well as groups.

The development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning (ML) technologies has triggered smart agricultural systems. In smart agriculture, irrigation management plays a major role to reduce water waste. The monitoring settings, hardware modules, communication technology, and storage systems used in smart irrigation systems were analyzed to determine the optimal nature of water flow. This assessment aims to give an overview of the current state of the irrigation system by taking into account weather and soil moisture. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the utilization of various hardware modules in smart irrigation systems. Moreover, various communication technologies that aid in data transfer for efficient smart irrigation are reviewed. The ML method used for prediction is also evaluated, as well as based storage technologies like the cloud and databases used to store data for predictive irrigation systems. As a result, the paper provides an overview of all the factors that contribute to irrigation systems’ smart operation as well as potential future paths for improving agricultural systems through IoT.
