Overview of FACTS devices for wind power plants directly connected to the transmission network

Abstract: In this paper state-of-the-art in FACTS for WPPs with AC\ud connection is given. FACTS devices with their properties are\ud described. HVDC, which in literature is also often recognized as\ud FACTS device, is out of this paper scope. Academic and\ud industrial research in FACTS applicability for WPPs is\ud summarized. Examples of few existing FACTS applications for\ud wind farms are given.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

“…Typically, STATCOMs have been used to provide reactive power at a PCC in a transmission network or distribution network for different purposes, e.g., control of voltage, load compensation and addressing LVRT; the most relevant feature is its capability of injecting a controllable reactive current independent of the grid voltage [17,[36][37][38][39]. A STATCOM is formed by a DC/AC converter, a capacitor on the DC side and a reactor on the AC side for filtering the high frequency components related to Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) commutation.…”

“…The resulting approach, called STATCOM + ES (energy storage), is usually implemented to smooth the output power [18], electromechanical oscillation damping [42], power flow and, depending on the storage used, even frequency control or inertia emulation [17].…”

“…To ensure safe and stable operations, the Transmission System Operators (TSO) impose stringent connection requirements based on country specific grid structure. FACTS devices can pay a vital role in enhancing grid code compliance [6]. The FACTS devices can provide voltage and VAR support, when grid voltage sags due to network fault, creating imbalance between electrical and mechanical torque.…”

“…Here, the term "particular fault" refers to a given fault scenario and given network conditions. Other CCT definitions, especially, for non-conventional generation (for example, for wind power plants [3]), and related aspects of power system dynamic performance are not considered.…”
