Overview of range gated imaging at FOI

Abstract: This presentation will review some of the work on range gated imaging undertaken at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). Different kind of systems covering the visible to 1.5 µm region have been studied and image examples from various field campaigns will be given. Example of potential applications will be discussed.

“…FOI conducted extensive theoretical and application research. Ove Steinvall et al's review article in 2007 [ 13 ] introduced the FOI achievements in GVT system research, including system design, concealed target imaging detection, imaging through fog and flames, moving target imaging, 3D imaging and target laser optics OPO [.l recognition [14] , system performance evaluation and other studies, and then innovatively put forward a method of using readability to measure laser image quality. Figure 4 shows the result of FOI range-gated 3D imaging, wherein (a), (b), and (c) were gated slice images of different parts of the car about 7.2km way.…”

“…They developed two experimental GVS [ 12] , using reception lens of two focal lengths of 2000mm and 500mm. The 2000mm lens reached a resolution on targets up to 10km away of 15cm.…”

“…Besides, range-gated imaging can capture high-quality gate images by suppressing backscattering. So active range-gated imaging has been widely used in night vision [1,2], 3D imaging [3,4], remote imaging [5], underwater imaging [6,7], 4D imaging [8], and security surveillance [9].…”

“…Currently, there are two broad categories of ToF cameras implementations, namely Continuous Wave Modulation (CWM) 3 and Rage Gated Imaging (RGI) 4,5 . CWM range imaging operates by illuminating the scene with an appropriately modulated light source and recording the reflected light.…”
